About Breast Augmentation Surgery

For this two-hour surgery, you will be given twilight or general anesthesia and will remain asleep during the entire breast enhancement procedure. Dr. Yu will make a small incision. You have incision options:

Periareolar (around the edge of the areola)
Inframammary (under the breast)- the most common incision site
Trans Axillary (in the armpit)

Through the incision, he will insert breast implants either under a layer of the muscle (subfascial) or behind the muscle wall ( sub muscular). After implant placement, Dr. Yu closes the incision. Dr. Yu may use surgical tape instead of sutures in order to reduce the appearance of scars resulting from your surgery.

What to expect during the Consultation Process

You will have private, personal consultation with Dr. Yu. During this time, Dr. Yu will realistically discuss your goals for your breast augmentation Dr. Yu and you will decide which procedures Dr. Yu will perform to achieve your desired results. Sub-Fascial Breast Implants

Dr. Yu can perform your breast enhancement procedure with subfascial placement of the breast implants. In this approach, the layer covering the outer surface of the chest muscle is elevated to create a space for the breast implant and allow support of the implant by a strong fibrous sheath. The primary benefit of this technique is that this muscle fascia can provide a physical barrier between the implant and your breast tissue to potentially decrease the chance of capsular contracture without disturbing or weakening the muscle. Dr. Yu can reduce the chance of developing “active displacement” of the implant when the muscle contracts via this technique since your muscle activity does not affect the implant placed in front of it. Another advantage of this procedure is that patients generally have less discomfort and a faster recovery when compared with the standard submuscular placement. Not every patient is a candidate for this procedure. The choice of the proper technique for you will depend upon your anatomy, goals and life style. At your consultation appointment, you and Dr. Yu will review your options together and determine the best location for your implants, while minimizing the visibility of any possible scarring.

Sub-Muscular Breast Implants

Dr. Yu can place your breast implants underneath the muscle of your chest wall (submuscular placement) or below a layer of the muscle called the muscular fascia (subfascial placement). The submuscular technique can provide more soft tissue coverage over the implant that may provide a more aesthetically pleasing result. However, the muscle does not truly support or hold the implant in place. There are risks and benefits associated with each procedure. Some patients may get a better result with one procedure compared with the other depending on their anatomy, choice of implant size and type. Dr. Yu does not believe that the placement of the implant totally above the muscle and fascia (subglandular placement) is indicated for any patients due to the higher incidence of capsular contracture with this technique. During your consultation, you and Dr. Yu will review these procedures and determine which technique and implant type (saline filled or silicone gel filled) will provide the optimal results for your personal anatomy, goals and lifestyle. Dr. Yu’s experience with this surgery can also help you estimate how long your recovery from surgery will take before you can participate in daily activities. Together you and Dr. Yu will decide the best location for your implants, while minimizing the visibility of any possible scarring.

Recovery

Breast enlargement surgery patients report some discomfort to moderate discomfort as they recover from the procedure. You may be sore for a few days after your breast augmentation procedure, but soon you will be able to resume your normal activities.

Dr. Yu will prescribe medication to combat any discomfort. You will need rest the first day but are encouraged to walk around the day of surgery. You should not lift more than 10 pounds for the first 10 days of your recovery. Your nipples may be sore for a week, and your breast area may be bruised and tender. This tenderness and bruising should go away within a few weeks. Scars fade with each passing week.
